Hallowe'en

Is a nondescript costume
The way to go
For Hallowe’en?
Something placid
Or is quirky better?
It doesn’t matter.
For it’s Hallowe’en
Time to have fun
Dress up adult and child alike
Be something you’re not
For just one night
The world is a magical place
Of goblins ghouls and witches
Pirates, policemen and firemen
Nurses, showgirls and the lot
All of them something that

There not
Childhood fantasy reached again
For just one night.

With a jib and a jab
The candidates weave
Stories of how they’ll govern
They’ve laboured to convince us
That they’re right
That the makeshift plans
They’ve made
We’ll make everything better
We cast our ballots
Hoping X truly marks the spot
To moving into a better world
More caring, more loving
Of fellow citizens
Our candidate wins
We rejoice, but a nagging voice
The inner self who has heard
All the promises broken
Over the years of their life
Asks will they follow through?
The inner child untouched
By lies, says yes
It will all happen
Now

Duck

Some people prefer duck
For Thanksgiving or Christmas
I think I'd prefer the duck
Swimming around

I find duck greasy and unappetizing
Maybe because of my hellish experience
Eating it in a fancy restaurant
Having duck delivered first with
Head neck and all
When all it did was ignite
Acid reflux for a week
Or was it two?
Repeating the taste
Forever more
If only in my memory.

Absorb the light
And not the dark
Lift up your face
To the warmth
Of human compassion
Be certain that there is charity
In the world
Do not leave someone
Empty handed
Spread the benevolence
Spread the feelings
Around the world

Simple kindness should abound
